Default Brother P-Touch labels

Made these labels with the Brother P-Touch label maker and put them outside in one of our hosta beds in April 2017. Had heard that these labels stood up well in harsh conditions, sunny, wet, hot. Yes, they did do very well standing up to wet, hot, and freezing, but not as well against sunshine. The more sun light they got, the more faded the label became. These labels where out for roughly 6 months and you can see in the photo the the Krossa Regal (top) was in deep shade and faded slightly the next Praying Hands little more sun, Ulysses S. Grant more sun, and the last (bottom) was August Moon which is in full sun. You can see that these labels do very well when protected from direct sun. Not as well in more sunshine. I can see how these labels, if protected from light, can last for many years. The labels adhere to tag like superglue and show no signs of coming off.

I have used those labels for years, and have never seen any sign of fading. Granted, most of that time my plants were in a greenhouse, so the covering alone reduces the UV significantly.

The labels on plants I had outdoors since moving to NC have also shown no sign of fading, but for the most part, those I stick down inside the pot, with only a little "tab" exposed at the top.

As far as UV is concerned, you can't beat a graphite pencil, but that rubs off way to easily. I'm sticking with my P-touch!

If you have the time, also put a label on the back if the tag. I've used Rays method, they faded and in the end, the hedge trimmers got them.

Ray, I to, will continue to use my P-Touch. These tags where face up to the sky, if they didn’t fade, something would definitely be wrong. If the tag was buried in a pot, with just the top sticking out, I believe that they would last, stuck on and readable for years. Since most of what we grow is usually in the shade and the tag is vertical. Fading would be minimal and you would probably not noticed a difference. P-Touch makes a good label that can take the wet, the humid conditions that we use them in and still stay readable.

These tags where just used for this year, to ID plants when the city garden club came to visit, back in June. Have a map of all the hosta, that has all the names and locations

Living in Phoenix, the thought of visiting a hosta garden is like visiting a unicorn ranch.

Here are a few photos of the hosta beds from back then. If we we aren’t growing orchids we’re growing hosta. Very low maintenance plants.

Beautiful. Do you have a Komodo Dragon? I have a few of Olga's national monument series and I love 'Golden Gste.' I guess I favor the big ones. Lol

We gad a variety of hostas back in PA. Here in coastal NC, I'm taking my time learning what my conditions are....
