Most primary care physicians are not trained in sleep disorders. A sleep specialist is trained.

ES is right. One of the most miserable experiences of my life began with seeking help for a mental health issue from my primary care physician. Should have just asked for a referral to a psychiatrist haha. If you have a special issue, you should really see a specialist.

Nonbenzodiazepines and Benzodiazepines--I had no idea there were so many medications for these disorders. I am glad I am not a doctor or pharmacist.

Yes there are a lot of them. I know about them because I started receiving treatment for mental health issues when I was a teenager, and through the years, I have unfortunately had some psychiatrists who solved everything with the prescription pad, so I have some experience with a wide array of these drugs lol. There were some periods when I was taking medications whose only role was to counteract the side effects of other medications I was taking.

I am very pleased that I finally found a doctor who is very conservative with medication. He tries therapy and behavior/lifestyle modification first and only uses medication as a last resort.

It's not hard with sleeping medicines - they work poorly, and have side effects that aren't worth it.

You should have seen the ads in journals every time one of these poisons was introduced. Works perfectly all the time! Refreshing sleep! No side effects! Give us your money!

It is good that you found the right doctor. That is very good news. You really need to learn all you can these days about any medical conditions and the medicines.

I did enjoy learning about these medications. I can now have a good conversation with my daughter the next time we hear about one of them in the news. Usually, I know very little about anything in the field of pharmacy.

It was interesting talking to my daughter as I thought she would be enthusiastically recommending the sleeping meds but she was completely against them. I asked about Valium and she just shook her head. She said that none of them were good. Wow.
