This is all really interesting. I've had 5 of these, and they all seem to thrive on staying very dry. One of them, which blooms peach, stays in bloom for quite a while, and then reblooms again a month or so later. No idea how long I've had them-guessing 8 or 9 years, but they seem super happy with neglect! I feed once a month or so with regular Dyna grow. They are potted in ordinary potting soil, and get bright indirect light from an eastern window, in my house. Now I'm curious what would happen if I start keeping them moist? Hmmm. Another thought, maybe I have Easter cactus rather than Christmas cactus? I don't do any thing at all with regards to hours of light and dark...

Might be worth watering one of them more often to see what it does. At worst, it'll look a bit unhappy, and you'll know not to do that any more.

I'm not sure how to tell the difference between Christmas and Easter cacti, aside from when they bloom (if their seasonal cycles are still in order), but someone may be able to tell if you post some pics of the plants and the flowers.

I am not all that worried about epiphytes or lithophytes or terrestrial orchids etc., getting a little detritus and leaf litter on them. I usually have potted epiphytic cactus in non-soil planting medium like seed medium. Maybe mix some choir, perlite or vermiculite in it for aeration.

Easter cactus have actinomorphic flowers (radially symmetric.) They are neither night-length nor temperature sensitive with respect to flowering. Schlumbergera (formerly Zygocactus) have zygomorphic flowers (bilaterally symmetric.)
