Thelocactus bicolor flowering
Thelocactus bicolor flowering today.
It occurs from the Big Bend region of Texas south into México. It is one of the few non-native cacti tolerating our full sun, heat and winter cold without protection. It blooms all summer, much better with frequent watering and fertilizing. It also survives on complete neglect.
There are hundreds of plants in this 18 inch / 46cm glazed ceramic container. I planted six, about 15 years ago. The rest are seedlings. They are growing in native soil.
I don't like using "cactus mix" for cactus. It is mostly peat moss, sawdust or the like. If not repotted every 2-3 years it breaks down and the plant rots away. With real soil cacti can stay in a container until they outgrow it. People with clay soils can incorporate 75%+ pumice, large-particle perlite or gravel.

Beautiful! Do you get any fruit? Are they edible?

This one has small top-shaped fruit that are dry at maturity.
I harvest fruit from prickly pears in landscapes around here and run them through my Jack LaLanne Juicer. The juice is great, or it can be boiled down to syrup. People who visit need to try a prickly pear margarita.
There are so many ground squirrels here I don't get fruit at my house, though this year I have been trapping them. I take them to friends in the Arizona Herpetological Association.
I have a fruit-producing Acanthocereus tetragonus, which makes really yummy fruit. I'm distributing cuttings to the local Arizona chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers, and also to people in California.
Myrtillocactus geometrizans also makes delicious fruit, but it takes quite a few plants to yield much. The other cacti grown for fruits in México are too tender for our winters.

It's so pretty. thanks for the info on the soil as I have been trying to decide what to re-pot my cactus in. So I can just use my very poor clay soil if I mix say perlite or gravel in it?

Yes. Aim for a pot/soil combination that will dry out in about 5 days during warm weather.
