Ok everyone I said in a post above that I had two pings for 18 months, those two do not go into an obvious succulent phase in winter that's why I started with them.
The two that are having the problems now I purchased only about 4-5 weeks ago! I've been trying to keep them slightly drier due to winter but none of the ones who want it seem to be going into it yet. And yes I have lessened the photo period as well since they are under lights not in a window. I don't have a timer yet, so it may slightly vary every day, but for the most part it is less time.
I have read that others are having trouble with this first trouble-maker too, it might be a harder one to grow?
The seller still thinks it much be the larvae but the photos I've seen online from larvae damage doesn't really look like this. He did suggest getting mosquito dunks and letting them sit in water for 24 hours then putting that in the saucers for the soil to absorb. But insecticides can be way too hard on pings so that worries me a bit. And he says he keeps his pings in water, lets it dry out for a bit then fills the trays again. I was watering from above and am now, as of yesterday watering from the tray instead. I had read on other forums that some pings don't like this though, so that's why I was watering from both above and below. I read that if you don't occasionally water from above you can get air and gas build up which can harm the plant. Also where I got my first sundews 18 months ago their requirements were to keep them drier and water from the top like a houseplant. I've read a lot of people prefer top watering.
I know the culture of the plants. I know they need "dormancy", as I said above I have had a flytrap in dormancy twice now and twice for one pitcher plant and now my new one I got a couple weeks ago is in dormancy too. So I know I need to do that for some of the plants. Just not all, since I purposely bought a few that won't need it.
Here is my list and what they need
tropical no real special winter care:
drosera capensis, scorpiodes, graomogolensis, and spaulata and Heliamphora heterodoxa x minor
butterworts:
pinguicula cyclosecta, agnata red leaf, laueana, florian, and moctezumae x gigantea succulent in winter (when I first read a care sheet it states to water from above leaving it to dry out completely between if it's 80% humidity, but if you can't get that then I read it's ok to water a little bit more frequently. most people say take care with a grain of salt since different growers and conditions vary, just pay attention to your plants.
pinguicula gina, aphrodite, and alfred lau #13- change shape a bit but don't really go succulent, and I have read from two different suppliers of them (and from some growers) that they don't require "dormancy" just less light and slightly less water in winter which is what I do, I do notice they have a heterophyllous pattern of growth but nothing real drastic, so I kind of let them do their own thing)
The one I want the most, which I'm not sure I will be able to find next year is Pinguicula primuliflora 'rose'. Mmmmmm double flowers! Also requires no special winter care as it wants moist year round.
