Tin, you can call 311 or 212 NEW-YORK to find out what the regulations are for Queens...or go to www.nyc.gov and use the Contact Us forms to send it through email

I don't mind people eating the frogs, but the way they were selling them was inhuman. I would bet money that some of the frogs drowned because they couldn't get air.
And that judge is as stupid as dirt. "Animals don't feel pain." Really? When people skin animals alive, they aren't grasping and writhing around because they like it! Dumb&^%

Wait a minute folks! All of these frogs will be eaten (or disposed of) at least that is the hope of the vendor. I am not against animal cruelty, but it is so common in many cultures to keep animals "alive" until selling or killing them for food. I am ceratainly NOT expressing any opinion on whether this is humane, but please keep in mind that different cultures have different values and tastes just as was expressed earlier. If we were to take this whole discussion to an extreme, would we say the same thing about vegetables (it has been proven in lab experiments that they feel "pain" in the sense that they express something like pain when stabbed)? I think I get where some of you are coming from, but this is NOT the same as animal cruelty like beating your dog.

I don't mind people selling animals like frogs to eat. Just because I don't want to eat them doesn't mean someone else can't. Just do it in a way that isn't cruel. As I said, I bet some of them drowned because they couldn't get air. I'm sure you can still sell the frogs and not have drowning.

cruelty to animals should NEVER be accepted.
as to the frogs and turtles etc; i would not be surprised if they were raised commercially on farms.

The original question here was "is this legal"? Although many of us have strong opinions on cruelty to animals issues, the answer to the legal issue can only be answered by somebody familiar with NYC laws...the way to find out what the regulations there are is to call the NYC Information Center by dialing 311 or 212 NEW-YORK

I think they can get the air they need. They can breath through both their nostrils and their skin.

I think this thread is very subjective. In the orient, chickens too can be freshly killed for you as well. They say there is a better taste to it being fresh.

The supermarkets with over stocked fish and seafood tanks, can be comparably as nasty as salmon farming, where many fish living in their own poop and polluting the sea. I can also mention that the fish and seafood are usually sold quite fast anyway, otherwise it is not economical for them to ship that many in the first place.

As well, how do you know for sure all the meat you get in grocery stores is 'humane'. I've heard of pig and chicken horror stories in north america...

we are just very used to meat being cut and packaged up in plastic. I've met people scared of a fishhead.

BTW there are laws against turtles in some places. I have never seen any for sale here in Alberta, both for consumption and pets.

I can only confirm this! I grew up in a farm, and I can swear by heaven, the animals "freshly killed" taste much much better than those killed, cut in pieces, packed and frozen several days in advance and sold at the "hygienic" supermarket!!

This thread has a highly ethnic bias built in it. While I agree that it is offensive to see animals treated so poorly, it is not unusual within Asian cultures to contain animals in such a manner. Other animals are handled in Western culture in similar situtations - chickens, cattle, fish, birds, pigs, sheep, etc. Is it so different because of what is being sold for food?

This is more of a statement of how humans treat animals in general than any specific threat.
