Poinsettia Seed Pod!
Default Poinsettia Seed Pod!

I thought you folks might be interested in this. My poinsettia which flowered this winter got pollinated and is putting out a seed pod. I'm absolutely shocked to see this, since I really did nothing special for it besides remembering to water it (most of the time).

Enjoy

What?! I always throw those things as they always fell off on mine. I thought the seed pods would be bigger that's why I throw them. Thank you for this information

i have never seen a pointsetta with a seed pod. And as far as watering goes, pointsettas are easy to tell when they need water. lol

Keep in mind that only the green wrinkly thing is the seed pod. The other little yellow things are flowers, and yes they do usually just fall off.

It's not just about knowing when to water, it's also about remembering to do it

Interesting how wrinkly the seed pod is.
Watering a bit too late can cause them to wilt, dry up and die. lol

Don't I know it. It's one of my most finicky plants, but I've kept it alive nearly 10 years now, so I must be doing something right.

I buy these every year around Christmas because they are everywhere you go and they do look great and very very long lasting.
I still have very mini variety bought for $3 last December. It is growing new leaves and all, but the red bracts are still there.

I used to grow these but now I just buy and toss. lol

This one has been an ongoing experiment in whether poinsettia can be used for bonsai. The result so far is a tentative yes, although I'm reluctant to post pics of the whole plant while it's still in its winter sulk. It's really ugly. Lol.

This year I bought one with small white bracts and a low branching habit. I plan to use what I learned on my experimental one to hopefully make a pleasing bonsai out of it.

I love the white variety as well.

These make great pot plants.
They can grow large I think as I have seen a huge tree sized one in Hawaii growing outside in the midst of other wild trees. It was quite interesting.

The red bract on that large one was long and skinny, so it might be a different variety.

You should be able to easily manipulate poinsettia by pinching any branch off thus encourage more growth and bushier growth.

The cut off branch can be also used to make new plants.

This is such a wonder plant! hahaha

Good luck with it and hopefully one day you will have a nice bonsai poinsettia to show off.
