What To Do With Cactus Fruits? Eat and Sow??
Default What To Do With Cactus Fruits? Eat and Sow??

This is the first time any of cacti I've tried produced fruits for me.
I picked them off the plant yesterday as I saw there were tiny black things ( I assume they are seeds??) inside the fruits.

I'm sort of tempted to taste them first as some of the cactus fruits I've eaten over the years were quite nice. hahaha
Are any of them poisonous??

If I were to sow them, how do I go about doing that?
Are cactus complex hybrids that seedlings will yield highly variable progeny? How long from seeds to germinate and to mature to a flowering size plant?
and is it worth going through the whole thing?

Until I get good answers, I'll enjoy looking at them.
Somehow they look like mini pineapple. Don't you think?
So cute!

Any helpful info will be highly appreciated.

Pretty bloom. It looks like one I have but am trying to kill. It hasn't bloomed in years.

I wouldn't eat any cactus fruit unless I was quite sure it has been identified as edible. Prickly pears are good, others may not be.

You might be able to grow some new plants from the seeds though. Good luck!

You could ask this in a cactus forum. Someone there would know, I am guessing. Maybe even Google it if you know the name/family of cacti.
Many cacti are edible...I just don't know which or much about the fruits. Dragon fruit is pretty good, though. We did sow some seeds from those.

Sowing cactus seed is pretty easy. You buy some potting soil that does not have fertilizer added, mix it with sand and perlite if it is too heavy (also without fertilizer) then mix water into the soil. I set the pots in clear bags and then sprinkle the seeds on top. Then I sprinkle a little potting soil on top (just enough to cover the seeds...the seeds are small so you don't want to add too much). I seal the bags and put them in a warm window. They usually don't take very long at all to spout (depends on temperature, though).

Mommy looks like some Matucana or Borziacactus (they are changing a lot of names, as for orchids). They are not edible; Do as Leafmite said to sow. They can take up to 2 months, but usually much less.
To see the little plants flowering, I suppose more or less 3/4 years, at least.

The cactus is in genus Rebutia. The seeds are extremely easy to sprout and grow. I have better results in builder's sand with no organic matter. That minimizes moss and algae, which quickly overwhelm slower-growing cactus seedlings. The seedlings will die if they dry out for too long, so keep them moist. Rebutia seedlings should bloom in a year or two.
