Default Aloe bakerii

I sure do love tubular shaped flowers. This love got me to loving Masdies in the Saltatrices section, Mediocalcars, Ericaceous plants from the blue-berry family, gesneriads, and finally plants in the Aloe family. Here is one of the many that I found in bloom in the New York Botanical Gardens this past Monday the 17th. Enjoy.

I was wondering what this species was. I have it, too. Even without being able to see the foliage in focus, I can tell with a good deal of certainty from the bloom. Not to mention, I have one in flower at the moment as well. Darling little species. Hummingbirds love it.

They bloom year round, multiple times a year for me, though winter seems to be a common time for blooming. They do well under T8 fluorescent lighting, and don't seem to need to be grown too terribly brightly. I under pot them, and let the clumps overgrow the rim. They get watered twice a week when I water the orchids (since they all grow together), and other than the spikes, the plants themselves are compact and fit well under the lights.

Wow, twice a week!! I would be afraid of rotting them if I had them.

Ooo! Lovely!
I have a few pots of a different species - just yellow flowers. The hummingbirds do love them.

Aloes can be over watered (probably the only way to kill them), but are definitely happier with more water than cacti. Tho I can attest to the fact that even NO water for a period of years will kill them But they definitely do (and look) better with regular watering.

Great! I didn't know that and I have one small aloe (not pictures in this thread) that I watered yesterday. I was kinda freaking out about it cause I remember watering it just two weeks ago.

Yeah, during the warm months, I haven't had any issues with over watering my aloes (I've got multiple species). In winter, I still water frequently, but I don't flood the pot, I give the plant just enough that it can soak it all up in a matter of hours.

Of course, as I mentioned, I keep these guys under potted, and in a quick draining mix, which I'm sure helps prevent rot at my watering rates.
