Schefflera actinophylla Chopped down

I grew up with a 2 large Schefflera plants. I remember our parakeets like to sit in them. I always thought they were so cool. So I bought one 7 years ago.

I abused it over the years. Threw it in a extra room and closed the door. The plant still lived but was not looking good. So I repotted it today. I had root rot big time. I think I saved it. I repotted the 2 plants in separate pots that were much smaller. I moved them to the living room so I can care for them better.

Here is the thing One was so pathetic looking I Chopped it down so it is only a 10inch steam. I think it will sprout but I am not 100% sure.

Anyone ever chop their Schefflera all the was down with good results. I hope this could help the plant grow some roots.

My Schefflera got really bad scale while it was outdoors this summer. I tried to kill the scale before brining it indoors. It didn't work. I ended up leaving it outdoors in the freezing temps. I thought for sure it was dead I treated it again and kept in the garage with no light. I didn't see any for quite a while. I finally cut it all the way down to small stems and brought it back indoors. I thought it wouldn't make it but gave it a try. It is throwing out new growth from the cut stems everywhere. It is pretty sad and small but it has tons of new growth everywhere.
I have seen that these are finicky but mine is very tolerant of abuse. I literally cut it to the base and it had no leaves and just sticks.

I find these plants are hard to kill. My dads plant he had since before I was born and that thing was over 20 years old when we moved and gave it away.

I am just hoping I get some growth from the steam that is left I never cut one back this much. Also the fact that the roots were so damaged.

The fact that you left yours out in the cold and it came back gives me hope. I think it will be ok. Only time will tell thanks.

I think it will. My niece gave me one a few years back to babysit for her. She had saved it from her hi-school and was heading to college. It had one branch that went out sideways and I cut it off and cut that in 2 pieces. Stuck then in the dirt in the pot all are growing. This thing has gotten so huge there is no moving it now.

The one stalk is so tall I have it staked but I am going to have to cut it off at some point. It is around 12 ft tall now.
