Along the lines of man using tools...

I didn't know that several animals use tools, for example, dolphins use pieces of sponge to stir up the ocean beds to look for food, and orangutans in the wild have developed and passed along a way to make improvised whistles from bundles of leaves, which they use to help ward off predators!

I didnt know that! Amazing..wow

I knew that research had suspected some of these things, but as technology gains and stretches our reach into the secret hidden wonders of nature I.E Penguin Cam,.. its absolutely amazing that animals have adopted the use of tools also.

Maybe we can teach them to use the internet next

Speaking of Dolphins... I recently went to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium where they have a dolphin named Winter who has a prosthetic tail. This dolphin is quite the super star. She has a movie made about her called A Dolphin Tail and they just finished a sequel.

I had no idea about this at all until my friend's daughters found out I was going to Clearwater and told me I HAD to take pictures of Winter for them.

The cool thing I learned while I was there, was that Winter's prosthetic tail required the veterinarians at the aquarium to develop a special polymer for her prosthesis because dolphin skin is way, way more delicate than human skin so anything that rubs against her skin and makes repeated contact could cause her injury and without this prosthetic tail, Winter would not be able to swim. The cool part to me, is that this polymer is now used in prosthetic knees for humans. People are able to walk more comfortably and with less pain, thanks to a dolphin who got tangled in a fishing net.

Sometimes, human beings are awesome. A bunch of folks with huge hearts did this amazing thing for this dolphin and THEN turned around and used it to help people too.

This is one of those times when I love the human race.

absolutely amazing!!! I saw that special on pbs. I didnt catch the part that the technology used to create the tail had filtered into humans. Makes perfect sense though!!!

Humans are amazing at times indeed

I didn't know that seahorses aren't monogamous.
In fact, they are pretty promiscuous

I didnt know that !!..Bad Horsey!!! Amazing!

BUT makes sense as in nature monogamy isnt the way to perpetuate the species so being promiscuous is how they carry on. There are animals that are known to mate for life that go against the majority.
Monogamy wasnt the humans way either until religion started to dominate the planet. sex was free and easy before it came along... promoting monogamy was a way to inhibit the spread of diseases in those times. They have found 'condoms' in the pyramids.

monogamy and promiscuity are man made terms to describe human relationships. I cant really say those terms would amply apply to nature. But all in the same they are applied by science to understand nature and classify it.

Monogamy is a rare thing in the fish world.

You know that pink pillowy tissue in the inside corner of your eyes? They are vestiges of an inner eyelid.
