Sarracenia purpurea in bloom
Sarracenia purpurea ("Northern", or "Purple" pitcher plant)
Sarracenia purpurea - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Blooming for the first time. It had been growing on a windowsill for a few years, so it never bloomed before - it needs a cool - cold, dry winter to go dormant, in order to bloom.
I have another - a quite small pup from this that I separated and potted last year - that has three, still small, buds on it.
The first couple of years I had this, I didn't care about getting it to bloom - the pitchers (when they aren't all dead after a freeze, and being rather dry over winter) are cool looking themselves - but then, I saw pictures of the flowers, and thought they were very pretty, and wanted mine to bloom! So, outside it went! The pitchers also get a lot bigger growing outside, getting full sun much of the day in summer. It probably gets more to "eat" outside, as well, although, I would find some flies or gnats in the pitchers occasionally inside.
Thanks for looking!

Nice, I love sarracenia, I grow all carnivores but do best with sarrs. In my climate, they can grow outside all year. Do you grow any other sarrs?

Thanks!
No, I just have this one - it had been recommended to me as an easy to grow CP, so I gave it a try. It has indeed been an easy grower, outside of having to buy water for it - not really an issue in winter, but in summer I frequently need to remind myself

I love the flowers on this! And the pitchers in summer are pretty cool, too!

Nice plant! Mine aren't even out of dormancy yet, but they stay outside year round. Cold it needs, but dry? Nope! I've found them growing and blooming on masses of floating plants in ponds in the NJ Pine barrens.

Btw anyone who wants Sarracenia that will do well indoors full-time should look at Sarracenia psittaca. It's the only species which will survive more than a few years without a winter dormancy.

Thanks
Mine is outside year-round, too, but different climates
True about not being entirely dty in winter - I just don't leave mine sitting in water over winter. They did get too dry tho with the lack of rain
