The "winter that won't quit" does have a bonus...the greatest irruption in memory of Snowy Owls. They are everywhere here. Even non-birders are gaga over them and bird photographers have probably taken thousands of images. At least 86 Snowy Owls at Logan Airport in Boston have been captured and later released. Here's a link to my set of images of these magnificent owls.Snow Storm - a set on Flickr
Well I am gaga over them, how beautiful. I thought orchids were gorgeous but I think these little guy's put them away. You can turn some loose in my neck of the woods.

Not so little - they are the largest of the owls at about two feet tall...and their feet look like snowshoes with talons !!
Years ago I bought a print of juvenile snowy owlets taken by Art Wolf in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge. I took it with me to work and hung it behind my desk. I got lots of questions including "what are those?" It now hangs in the bedroom and I see it frequently. So even though I will probably never see one in the feather in my area, I have my "babies".

I remember seeing one back in the late 1960s a half a block away from my house in the middle of NE Philadelphia PA. It sat on the peak of a neighbor's roof for almost an hour before it flew away. Upon first seeing it I was sure it couldn't be real, until it blinked! I stood no more than 30 feet from it until it flew away. Too bad we didn't have cell phone cameras back then!
