Well, I am looking at 50 this year near Christmas and I have been growing orchids for about five years I think, but I agree with Cupcake, here in Britain they were wreathed in mystery and classed as a rich man's hobby - heating a greenhouse and sourcing plants was viewed as difficult until the sheds got involved in shifting them.
However I have had the growing bug since I was six and I think its genetic, my family all garden something. I had to wait until I was thirty to get a garden as such, but I have always had pot plants. I loathe homes that don't have a plant or two and no books lying around....
Orchids are fast becoming a passion and unlike cacti at least I don't have to keep them going for decades to see them flower. I do wish I had started earlier though, the learning would have come easier
Good luck to all you younger growers, just hope your hobby doesn't leave you living on baked beans
