I agree. Age is just a number. I'm 41 and I happen to look and feel better than when I was in my 20s. I wasn't out of shape or anything then. I am just wiser about many things now and more willing to take chances than when I was in my 20s. I know that's odd.

I DON'T SEE THE 30 SOMETHINGS OUT THERE. I'M 32 AND WAS THRILLED TO TURN 30, WHY, I DON'T KNOW, I THINK I WANTED TO CLOSE THAT 20'S CHAPTER OR SOMETHING. ANYWAYS I WAS 21 WHEN I FIRST RECIVED AN ORCHID AS A GET WELL GIFT. BTW I DON'T RECCOMEND HEAD FIRST DIVES OFF OF HAY-STACKS IT'S NOT AS FUN AS THEY SAY...

Gosh I wish I had started with orchids in my teens! But in the UK, they have been almost a secret till the last few years and only for specialist growers/ enthousiasts, or have I been on another planet? They have this reputation of being difficult and needing special car, and here they are SO expensive. I did begin a love affair with gardening in my 20's especially roses, but orchids didn't appear on my radar till my 50's. Now I must live till I'm 100 to get my money's worth!
Congratulations to all the young growers for being infected with the orchid virus so soon, it's such a pleasurable illness!

I know someone that was 14 when they started growing orchids. They aren't on this board, though.

I'm 23, but I started with orchids when I was only about 12 or 13 years old. My grandfather was a master gardener with roses and african violets, and I remember my mother having a Phal when I was very young, so I guess they are to take the credit (or the blame!). My mother's Phal never bloomed for her, and she finally threw it out because she said the leaves reminded her of a plant sticking its tounge out in spite! Now I have refined my growing skills with great success, though my boyfriend is getting a bit frustrated with my orchid-buying tendancies! He'll just have to deal with it...!

hi everyone,
just thought i would put my 2 cents.
i started growing orchids when i was 12/13 and have been since, now i'm 28. the collection keeps growing and you keep learning. i also recently joined my local society, and i think i'm the youngest.
i guess it's true. when you get infecteed with the orchid bug.... it's hard to quit.
good luck to all the growers out there!
