I'd say a BBB complaint... just because they have a crappy agreement, doesn't mean you have to like it... a BBB/cust service complaint from 5000 people may make them change their policy. You don't really stick it to the man, because if you let the membership lapse, at most you get 2 full years and no coverage during the lapse. What if you want to renew for 2 years You get only one year, since the 2nd year will count from then renewal date ROTTEN !!!! Glad we don't have Sam's Club in

No sweat. Same with Costco.

Ross, I read all the fine print on ALL of my stuff, which is a lot...and sorry but I don't have a photographic memory.

The deception here is that they start automatically telling you your card is expiring 6 weeks prior to it happening...not just a reminder that it's about to happen but a renewal option in the middle of your shopping order. It is designed to catch people off guard and that is deceptive.

If my post helps anybody avoid this happening to them, then I did what I set out to do...honestly

Cool Sam's

Thanks for the heads-up. I didn't know this. I got my renewal 3 weeks ago and the card doesn't expire until 1/6/2008. Fortunately, I don't renew until they catch me at the register. Too bad you have to watch everyone like a hawk these days.

Sam's Club is WalMart's version of CostCo: a warehouse store that you pay a membership fee to get the right to shop in. Ostensibly this gets you better prices through group pricing. They (at least CostCo does) do this by selling large, bonus sized packages of most things.

My experience with CostCo is the prices are not THAT much better on most things and substantially higher on others. Some things are a great price. In other words, just like the membership fees, you have to be on your toes, be wanting what they have the good pricing on, want large quantities of it and know your prices.

Default I seldom use Sam's Club

mostly for the Orchid Society. My wife gets the card through work and they pay a year at a time only.

Ok thanks guys, that's an interesting one. I don't think we have anything like it in Australia.

Costco does not try to steal time from their members:

Thank you for your email to Costco Wholesale.

When you renew your Costco membership the renewal extends from the time you signed up for the membership.

...which is the way it should be!

I had Costco up in NY but the closest one down here is way too far for me to get to

Regular price on most things is lower at Sam's Club. Diapers and formula are worth the price of membership alone - both of which I've been spending a small fortune on.

They carry some things that other places don't. And the package sizes on food are larger. You can get some pretty good deals. But, a good sale at the grocery store will probably be a lower price than what you can find at Sam's for a lot of items. Often substantially lower. Nothing goes on sale at Sam's. For example cases of Pepsi are less at regular price at Sam's, but when they go on sale for $8 at the grocery store you can save a lot of money. And pop is always on sale somewhere.
