Mini Roses?

It's too late. I woke up to a serious snow this morning. I thought I had a few more days before it started. I'm going to bring it in and put it in the garage for a few days, just to let it acclimate to a slightly warmer temp, then I will move my orchids from the dining room into my office where my plant light is (which I need to do anyway, they won't get enough light without it) and put the mini rose where the orchids are now so that it can get some sun over the winter... and pray that it doesn't die.

Give it a dose of granular rose systemic (the three-in-one) if you keep it indoors. Roses need full sun to be happy and often suffer stress in less than idea conditions. Be careful not to over/under water as the rose will be less tolerant with less than ideal light. As you grow roses outdoors, you likely already know how finicky they can be.
If you find you need lighting, a cheap grow lamp with a 60 Watt (Dayspot is one) grow bulb or an (agrosun is what I have) 32W compact flourescent bulb would work well for the rose. Just give it extra hours.

As an indoor plant, your mini rose is pretty much doomed to die though it might be able to limp through one winter indoors. They simply are not meant for indoor life. Planting it pot and all outside would probably be your best bet (perhaps close to the house foundation?) or even unpotting it but not breaking up the rootball -- just setting the pot-shaped mass in the hole and back-filling. Another option would be a cold spot in the basement or garage (assuming the temp in the garage does not hit freezing). A downside to the second method is trying to hit that "sweet spot" watering wise to prevent the roots from completely desiccating but not so moist that they rot.

I've never actually understood why people thought roses were finicky. I've always heard that, but I don't really do much with mine and they bloom beautifully for me every year. I don't even cover them in the winter. I just leave them be and trim them back hard in March or April, right before they come out of hibernation. I give them some granules of fertilizer after I've trimmed them and start up the automatic sprinkler system (this is probably my saving grace here, LOL!) and then I leave them alone and don't bother them again until next year, unless one of the branches grows into the walkway, then I will cut it back so that the dogs don't come inside with giant rose thorns in their noses.

Edited to add: I will see what I can come up with today. It's not quite cold enough for the ground to have frozen solid yet, the sun is shining now, so I might be able to get a pot shaped hole dug in the rose bed. I've got a great spot for it where the larger roses I have can shield it some from the wind and winter scariness. My roses are all about five feet tall, or taller, so that should give it the cover it needs.

What type of roses do you grow?

They're all hybrid teas from Jackson and Perkins. My favorite are my peace roses. I have one that was named after Princess Diana that has tried to collapse under its own weight a couple of times. I finally managed to correct it last year and it bloomed beautifully for me this year.

When I lived in town I had beautiful roses but out here in the wind blown flats it is a bit tricky. I do have a Veterans Honer that is doing good. I have to plant them very deep the crown about 3 inches below the ground and then they still need a little cover.

I did manage to get this little mini in the ground. We'll see how it does over the winter. I'll cover it the day before our next snow is supposed to arrive and hopefully that will work. Fingers crossed!
