Default Monotropa uniflora (Indian pipe)

This is not an orchid. It is, however a flowering plant with no chlorophyll - a saprophyte. Like orchids, there is a dependent relationship on certain fungi.

It is somewhat rare, and when I have seem them, they are always in the deep woods. But not this colony - it is growing in my neighbor's lawn!! This is one of the largest colonies I have ever seen (larger than just the clusters you see here).

Thanks for sharing! That is really interesting and the plant is so fitting for this time of year because its other names are the corpse or ghost plant.

I would not call them rare, but I have never seen them on a lawn. Nice find too!!!
