Insect Discovered in my Home the Earwig
What the heck is this thing? I typed a description of it in Google and it came up and I did a little reading on it. I don't even know where this bug has come from. I don't know if it traveled along from the store inside one of my orchids or if it is a generally common insect found in the cracks and crevices of my home. Will this thing eat my orchids? Will it bite my dog? My children?
This is the FIRST TIME in my LIFE I have seen this thing. My fiancee and I couldn't believe it. My dog was barking so I went upstairs to see what all the fuss was about and my youngest daughter said "dad dad look" and there it was: on the floor crawling on the carpet!!! Of course I burned the sucka!!!
What do I do to get rid of these things? How can I find out if I have more? I don't wanna lose any of my orchids to this little monstrosity!!! HELP!!!!

I really don't think it will hurt your orchids. I did get them in the garden one year and they ate on the lettuce. They are attracted to moister and they will get under anything that will hide them. They don't harm much just annoying.

They can eat orchid roots, and new shoots
I've had people tell me otherwise but I've had several occurrences of having plants that were getting munched, then finding and removing an earwig and the munching stopped.
They are quite common here, we see them all the time, sometimes in the house, more often in the greenhouse and the garden. They are relatively harmless, but I've found if they are living in an orchid pot they can do some damage to it.
I get rid of them in orchids by re-potting, in the garden I just ignore them if they are not near the orchids, or squish them in the house.

Yea, we have them all over up here... They're creepy looking! That's crazy that you've never seen them before! I would think they are all over the south, but maybe not?

Hmm.... we call them pincer bugs down here.
Or pincher bugs.
Creepy looking but relatively harmless.
They will eat roots though.
I've noticed they only seem to like small hair roots for the most part.
Ewww... in your brain.
I had eggs in my arm and that was more than enough for me.

It freaked me out when I had been camping in my teens and found one nestled in the bristles of my tooth brush. A bit to close to thinking it could have been crawling on me in my sleep!
