This is pretty interesting discussion. If I understand where things are headed for me I will be up to my butt in orchids, broker than I am already, still raking leaves, still mowing the grass, still following Orchid Board, still watching reruns of CSI in the evening, still reading Andy's site wondering if he's come up with another orchid I don't have yet, still designing my unpteenth orchidarium, well... you get the picture.

The food problem can be resolved by drastic reduction in the consumption of meat eating. Over 3/4 of the food raised in the US is used to feed animals intended for consumption. Vast quantities of water are used in that system as well. Not to mention the environmental consequences of the waste produced.
I am not a vegetarian, vegan or anything like that. I totally enjoy the meat I consume. I just think too much effort and resources are spent on producing it.

True, and the oceans are over fished. Soon there will be no fish left to catch.

How did I not see this post when it was originally created?? Ive been interested in the Mayans (and their end of days prophesy) since I was a kid. I jumped online to find some good sources really quickly and here is a decent one: Mayan End Times Prophecy 12-21-2012
If I remember correctly, the "end of days" is not the appocalypse as the bible tells, but is more about a massive "change" for human kind. If I remember correctly, according to the Mayans (to paraphrase), "animals will talk and everything manmade will turn against us." My interpretation of this is something to the effect of artificial intelligence running amuk. Im not really sure though. Either way, Ive always been curious (since like 3rd grade I think!!) and I will certainly be keeping an eye on what goes on!! Im not worried though, the earth and its inhabitants will be just fine, they always have!!

My Personal Opinion!? (Not meant to offend)
Well I would bet more on 2036 and Apophys (Asteroid). But by then if the human race can pull it's finger out it's own backside no worries. It's not a given that it will collide either, it may just come very close.
End of world stuff!? Pah! The planet may survive, it's life that's the fragile thing.
I remember the Hoo-hah and scaremongering about those meteor hitting Jupiter. Or the turning on of the Hadron Collider.... World's still here.
Well you take your chances. I'm no Astro-Physicist, Genius of the third degree so I can't really help with solutions to the un-ending problems that will come our way.
If you are going to worry about something that may or may not happen, then why not spend you time creating solutions rather than panic?
There are so many thing in this universe that could wipe us out, that it's quite bizarre really that we're still here.
Enjoy life and don't take it for granted! It's too short as it is when you compare it to say the age of the Sun or the Solar system, well we're just a blip. A rather special blip, but still a blip.
So, rather corny I know but "Be good to one another!"
What will I be doing on 21st Dec 2012. Hopefully enjoying some specials birthday party.

At this point, to me, Dec, 2012 is superstitious hype.
There're no guarantees of anything. And no one has any idea what'll happen by then.
If the end of humanity comes about and is out of our control, then why bother? If things are within our control, why not do something positive?
For me, life goes on end of the world at 2012 or not.
While I believe in the good points of certain Christian teachings and the Bible, I honestly think as a person who takes some interest in learning about the Bible's history, that it was never meant to be taken too literally, regardless of whether many of the characters in the Bible were real or not. Some of the events that occurred are too over sensationalized to be taken 100% seriously. The degree by which some of the events of the Bible should be taken seriously, in my opinion, must be taken in context and must be thought out critically. Much of the Bible is symbolic not literal! Especially the Book of Revelations! It reads like a fantasy novel, I mean literally. I could easily jokingly say that whoever wrote the Book of Revelations might have been on a major drug trip of some sort while they were writing it (in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they really were on a drug trip). Plus, the Book of Revelations does not literally state 2012 as the time of the end of the world. Somehow, 2012 managed to be associated with Revelations in modern times, most likely through "over interpretation".
Nostradamus's claims has also not been scrutinized enough to be considered 100% credible or accurate.
The Mayan calendar as advanced as it was for its time, was based on the positioning of the stars in the sky. I don't know enough to say much about this one, but I don't think it's a valid source to determine the "end of the world".
If anything, at the moment, it's just popcorn entertainment.
