Tin, From what I understand of the 21 December 2012 date from the Mayan's is not that they were predicting 'the world will end' - they actually said that 'nothing made sense after that date'... which would fit with any kind of major natural disaster or planetary cataclysm. With the extremes of weather and other natural disasters that seem to be occurring more and more frequently, I think that it is almost too late for the citizens of this planet to realise that life as we know it now is unsustainable.
As for the question about what I would do with the orchid collection?? Given that I could safely stay in my own house (and that is far from a given!), I would continue on as I have. I use rainwater for watering, many are mounted - and the rest can be, I grow in natural light, and the majority don't require any heating either.
I would really miss being able to connect with all of you guys here, though.

Tin, I've read about the Myan's prediction. What I thought was so interesting about it is HOW different a person has to be, how different their cultural perspective on life really was. . .to think of ALL things in terms of time. . .revolving around vast repeating cycles of time. Look at how good they became at MATH because they valued time!
Imagine, if at all possible, and I really doubt that it is possible, looking at the world and everything in it, without knowing what you know. What would the world look like?
You see things moving in time. . .repeating. . .you start seeing patterns and so you pursue it. You notice and start recording events in the skies. And begin to be able to predict some cycles. . .with freakin great accuracy. So you totally believe the predictions. Maybe even make the predictions come true. ..giving in when you should maybe fight because you believe that it's already set in the stone calendar that you're doomed.
I don't think they thought it was going to be the end of the world on 21 December 2012 but that there was another BIG change or shift to come at that time. . .lots of bad things and lots of new things. . .a time of major shifts and realignments.
Which I do believe is coming. . .we're too out of balance with oh, every single thing around us.
I am trying to make changes, trying to be less piggy with fuel, electricity and water. But as I cut back there it seems like my piggyness just gets rerouted into my being a greedy gut for orchids. *oh brother*
As things change, we've really got to focus on being adaptable and hanging on and protecting beautiful, precious life. . .no matter what the form.

Thanks all for a thoughtful thread!
I'm pretty confident that the world will not end on the winter solstice of 2012. Whether humanities myriad masses will long survive is another question. What is the carrying capacity of the planet? Is perpetual growth sustainable, or the ideology of a cancer cell? I'm afraid that the real test of humanities will is to retool our economy to function on a non-fossil fuel energy system. Too many problems are caused by oil. And many of our solutions depend on oil too! Our shared love of plants should provide great inspiration. Plants provide all of us with the food we eat and the oxygen we breathe. Even the oil we so adore is ultimately the result of solar input. There's a lot we don't know about how our planet works. The ancients were onto something in their understanding of the larger cyclical patterns underlying modern events. We're definitely approaching a critical juncture. Look on the bright side; the sun will be still be there on the morning of December 22nd, 2012.

i personaly dont think the world will end on december 21st 2012, although when the earth is to be destroyed i cannot say. I'm religious so that is what i am going by (sorry for those that dont want me to bring religion into it). In the bible its said that there will be signs before the end of the world; their will be more natural disaters, more wars, melting of ice caps, all said in the bible. so we maybe closer to the worlds end than we think. But what i can say is that if the judgment day is to come it should not be feared for those that know that they have lead a good life and have repented, because, hopefully, you will be taken to heaven when Jesus comes down to save the rightious

No human's mind can comprehend what will happen or not happen. I believe we are all here to serve a purpose and will not leave this earth until that purpose is accomplished. Anyone can theorize, but no one knows God's mind (our creator, higher power, however you call him/her) ....it's not possible. Therefore, the date for the end of time can not be predicted by humans, however brilliant. (I'm assuming we are talking about a natural end, not human error, such as nuclear). A dear friend with a terminal illness once said ... "I'm not dead yet, and until I am, I will live until I die." Sounds weird, but it was the best advice I have ever heard. So, having said all that, I will be shopping for orchids ....I mean.... Christmas gifts and living life to the fullest. kiki-do

Thank you for this post. I knew it was just a time before this would come up. I agree and would add that "it is not for us to know". I'll be in that group, and am comfortable with this. I also know that purchase of more orchids is not a waste of time as I plan to enjoy my time here on earth, whether it is that date or some other. There are so many things to worry about (heck, my cable bill is going up next month ). Gasoline here costs over $3 a gallon (US) and shipping costs keep going up, meaning my orchids cost more

Actually, I am hoping that the Earth goes on without us. I don't think the end of the Earth is for us to know, that is God's decision and God's secret. As for our end, I bet God can make a 99.99% accurate guess, because he is the supreme being, and because he is bound by the fact that he gave us free will (Hence the .01% uncertainty). He might be off by a few seconds or so Or we might see the error of our ways and change everything and survive for a few million years. Who knows. Thats why I would like people's opinions. Keep them coming!
P.S. Ross, gas in NYC is at 3.49! Well thats the Supreme or Super or whatever you call it. At self-serve though.

I for one don't believe in god at all. I think we make our own decisions and we will become the victims of our own stupidity.
This planet is ours to destory and we're doing a pretty good job so far.
