Seeing how many people behave on FB, I'm not so surprised

I just watched two girls who live in my street end their friendship via a violent argument for this reason.
From what I gathered one of them un friended everyone on her account and deactivated it because she felt Facebook was having a negative impact on her life.
The other girl could only concentrate on the fact that Facebook said they weren't friends anymore. So she completely cut off the girl that day.
Nevermind the fact that girl one showed up at girl two's house to talk with her and hangout. That didn't seem to matter.
And recently a person I considered a dear friend broke all contact with me because I bought her ex a drink. She saw it on someone's Facebook (I don't have one).
I was in a large group at Disneyland for a mutual friends birthday, and said I'd buy everyone a drink. I wasn't going to exclude the guy because they broke up a few years ago...
Apparently that was not ok with her.
It saddens me a little that people are handling Facebook this way.

I closed my Facebook account shortly after they went public. It's pretty rough because so many people rely on Facebook to communicate what's happening in their lives, so sometimes I end up a bit late with the info. I do sneak a peek on my fiance's facebook once in a while because she is friends with my family and most of my friends. If the social media craze doesn't die down, I might end up caving and going back to it. For the moment, I'm sticking to my guns.

I really don't think its all that bad. People argue and stop being friends in real life for the same reasons they do on FB. Honestly, I've become better friends with many people that I might not have had that much contact with before simply because it turns out we have more in common than we thought. I think the positives of FB FAR outweigh the drawbacks.

I do think it is very sad to see how many people handle themselves in a less than healthy way online. While this may seem baffling to some of us, I think the fact that so many people are unaware of the unhealthy nature of their online behavior should tell us that this a real problem. Unlike face to face social interaction, online interaction causes emotional responses from people that cannot be seen. We get verbal, tonal and nonverbal feedback from all of the people around us, telling us when they feel hurt, judged, angry, happy, loved, inspired, as well as giving approval, disapproval, judgement, etc. While all of people's thoughts and emotions are not necessarily blatantly visible, we do learn much of how to behave from this type of feedback. Considering all of this, I believe online etiquette needs to be taught. Whether in school or in the home, it needs to be taught to this generation that is growing up with social media.
