Echinocactus texensis blooms
I love my orchids, but I also think variety's a good thing. After a long, cold and dry winter rest, my three-headed Echinocactus texensis is beginning its bloom cycle. No fragrance to the flowers, but I like the color combination.

Steve, you should (I would think, judging by the species name) be able to find these in your back yard (or nearby). From what I've read they're often despised by ranchers for the trouble they cause to unwary livestock. Still, a really cool plant to grow--and it even thrives in our humid and wet Midwest summers.

I checked out the range and it seems they grow wild in west Texas which is pretty far from where I live. The climate here is perfect, but the soil is not. Thats ok though because I can easily provide good soil! I'll have to keep an eye out for these guys next time I'm at a local nursery.
