I have had trouble a few times now explaining the climate here, it's pretty simple for the Americans as you have your numbering system but we don't really have that here. So, I thought if I supply some climatic info for my region maybe the Americans here might be able to give me an idea of an equivalent climatic location in the states?

Here goes nothing!

This is a map of Aus with the 'climate zones' marked to give you an idea of location to start with. If you look at where Canberra is about 1/3 of the way up in the east and go straight out from there I am on the coast. We are marked as 'warm summer, cool winter'.
Main Climatic Zones of Australia (temperature and humidity)

The top box on this page shows average temperatures and rainfall across the year
Pt Perpendicular climate, averages and extreme weather records

This one also has temps(from a slightly further away weather station) but includes 9am and 3pm humidity as well

Not alot of thought goes into the numbered system.
What's the lowest winter temp for your region?
That's how you determine climate zone.

In my area we use a different system called the sunset climate system.
It's much more detailed and takes into account highs and lows in temp, humidity, wind, and hosts of other things...
It's slot more useful and I hope it catches on.

The USDA zones

Sunset is a magazine with a focus on the western US lifestyle; food, architecture/decor, travel, gardening, that sort of stuff. I don't know how useful this will be for you but you can click on and read all the regional climates. The Sunset zones

Thanks. Ok well it looks like I am approximately the equivelent of coastal Southern California, Sunset zone 21 or maybe 10a in the USDA zones. Atleast it means I can put myself into context a little better when trying to explain my climate to non Aussies
