You haven't heard of these???
These are super popular and common, usually offered as bulbs or potted plants around Christmas for their red color, although they come in kinds of different colors and color combinations and shapes.
It is the marketing thing here. You can buy many different varieties online and they are available starting late fall geared toward the big holiday.
Flower shops usually carry red or white varieties. Even red ones have quite a few hybrids around.
These produce large colorful flowers but they do not last that long (one week, more or less), which is a down side compared to orchids. and they only bloom once a year around March-April if grown normally.
They usually make two scapes per bulbs (some varieties more ) and each scape makes typically 4 (upto 6) flowers.
Some make all the scapes at the same time and offer wonderful but short lived flower show (like my Show Master) and some will give one scape after another, lasting longer (like many of what I have grown, about 2-5 weeks).
Search their images online and you might get hooked.
The plants are basically ever green and require no special treatment to flower.
They get big, so that is another downside for me. Otherwise, I would have tons of them!

hmmmm that could be either brandnew cultivar or a "twisted" name as it happens sometimes.
If it is true red, then given the flower appearance, it is most likely Red Peacock. very pretty flowers.

Amaryllis Minerva is what it is, I'm almost certain.

My Show Master always make two scapes at the same time and flowers open around the same time as well.
Now the second bulb of Show Master is growing two of its scapes at the moment. I think I will get to have another flower show in the next week or so.
Aphrodite finished its first scape and now the second one is on. It only have two flowers open at one time, but flowers are huge! (10 inch across!!!)
This time, I noticed there are five flower buds on the second scape. never seen this happening on this plant. It is common for Show Master making 5 or 6 flowers per scape.

They're beautiful though, I love the one in the first picture you have that is red and white, which one is that one?
I don't really want to get hooked on any other plants but I would make an exception for that beauty

Hi NY,
White Flower Farm usually sells just the bulbs every year. There is a nursery near me that has bulbs so big I needed a ten to twelve inch pot to pot them in.
There is also: Amaryllis, Large Amaryllis Bulbs, Indoor Flowering Amaryllis Bulbs, Double Flowering[Pagesize=24*ava=1].
I haven't ordered from them yet to know how their quality is, but Brent and Becky's Bulbs has amaryllis too. They have a white with green in the middle called Christmas Gift. They also have two greens. One is Evergreen and the other is SA 'Green Dragon'. The Green Dragon is a Sonatini type and has a profusion of smaller flowers. It also stays a smaller more manageable size...room for more .
None of them have their usual large variety right now.

Wow! I almost thought Lemon Lime at first.
Green Dragon I see are usually white with some hint of green mostly toward the throat.

That's right. I buy many of them each year and then do not keep them after flowers are done.
The problem of sending them over is that they are all in growing mode with huge leaves and roots. They will get damaged in the process.
I dumped my Dancing Queen the othre week and now I'm thinking of Benfica, dark red, I like it but it's readily available and I like to try different reds each year.
I have Ambiance that hasn't initiated any leaves yet for almost two months after flowering, which is strange but the bulb feels firm. that one would be easy to ship.

It was given the name without bloom. I have surfed the internet and found mine was more like Lemon Lime. I will check with name with the seller.

I got my aphrodite from white flower farm years ago. I bought so many amaryllis bulbs, but I still remember how impressed I was about what I got. Very very big healthy looking bulb with no blemish of any kind!
I have mine in 10 in pot as well.
They have lots of exciting varieties but rather expensive. Aphrodite is now much cheaper, but when I bought it, it was over 30 for just one bulb.
The other website is also a good place. I've been eyeing for beauty bell and lovely bell for quite some time now.
By the way, blossom peacock is really pretty (a lot more so in person) and quite nicely scented!

These are all hybrids, but orginal species are from the west coast of South America and part of the Carribean.
Easy to grow (direct sun and water) and bloom once a year with large colorful flowers. over the years, they make bulblets too.
Which one are you refering to? they are both white and red. The one with multiple layers and less red?? That one is Aphrodite and the other one with more red is Show Master, but there is another variety call Temptation, which basically looks almost the same.
I love these plants!
