Just in time for Halloween...
I could not believe what I found at Home Depot, the other day! I was doing the usual check for eye-catching orchids, when my eye was caught by something else..... Tacca chanterii (black bat plant) and Tacca integrifolia (white bat plant). I had seen them on line, but pictures just don't do them justice. They are almost like a giant Paphiopedilum, and prefer just about the same growing conditions. The black one was pretty cheap, but the white one is a little more rare (i.e. more costly), which is why I was surprised to see it at the Depot. Here's a picture of the white one, the black one is in spike....but looks like it may open by Halloween, so I'll post a pic asap. The petals will fall down to the sides, like wings.

My office mate, Diane, has a black one.
We haven't been able to stand waiting for that amazing bloom to occur on its own. Soooo, we have "stooped soooo low" as to have made a photocopy of the bloom, cut it out and glued it to a stick.
What can I say? But I sure do love your plants and their Halloween blooms!

Full shade, I've read that you should treat them just like a Phalaenopsis. Although, they like their medium acidic (5.1-5.6), similar to a Paph..

Susanne, If you make your way a little bit north, I found them at the one in Holiday (US19). They're gonna live with my chids.

Jasen, our experience is that they do NOT like to dry out at all. I am so happy for you that you found both the black & the white ones! OMG! That's what I call a jackpot!
The second I see one of these at Home Depot. . it's MINE!
Susanne, make the drive. . . do it! do it! do it! Of course, this is only a suggestion.
