It's Amaryllis time again!!!
Default It's Amaryllis time again!!!

While my Aphrodite and Show Master (possibly Temptation) are still sleeping, three others are blooming beautifully!

Pictures are of Dancing Queen (double), Benfica (dark red), and Ambiance (white red stripes). The picture of buds are of Ambiance. I just enjoy looking at those buds with red lining at the edge.

I have to say I am just in love with Ambiance!
I was hoping the flowers will have more red than white and it came out just as I wished!!!
Two stalks opened up their flowers at the same time. Now the third one is slowly growing taller.

Dancing Queen was also nice, but I just couldn't get a nice picture showing its beauty. All the flowers are gone and the second stalk poking its tip just above the bulb seemed stucked. I thought bulb started to rot or something.
Then out of nowhere, a third stalk came out between the spent stalk and leaves. It is alive, yay!

Now, I've been getting different red varieties and by far, Benfica is a keeper! a bit dark, but true red I've been looking for without any hint of orange at all.

Red Amaryllis had been popular around Christmas for the color.
Now many more colors other than red are available, but still most are sold around December.

If you force them to bloom from November to Sping time.
Naturally, most will bloom in the spring.
I just bought these three.
When I grow Amaryllis at home and rebloom, they always bloom around April.

I had Amaryllis Basuto (large red flowers) that had two flowers on a stalk last year and that was not normal.

Normally, these will have 4, occasionally I see 5 like my Ambiance and Show Master.
Certain hybrids make 5 readily. Show Master, Temptation, Alfresco are some examples.

Then there are Amaryllis with smaller flowers or skinny look (cybisters), and these always make lots of flowers per stalk.

Do you know what kind you have? If it is a large flowering type, it should have 4.

As with orchids, adequate light is very important for growth and bloom.
Amaryllis need full sun all day. Half day also work. but full sun is what they need to thrive.

Mines all sit on south window getting direct sun all day.

Wow, those are wonderful!! I always buy some, and always neglect them after blooming, so end up tossing them. Late 2011 I bought a bulb of Hippeastrum papilio, because I really love that one. But the halfgrown stem rotted, and that was it for that year. And I actually took care of after. This winter it finally grew another stem, I waited with much anticipation..........to discover that it was plain white.

Someone mixed up the bulbs in the store!

Well done!!!! As one who considers himself a Hippeastrum aficionado, you've done very well.

Hippies, as I call them, don't mind neglect but they do prefer even moisture, light feeding and as much sun as humanly possible.

If I lived in a mild climate, I would grow tons of them outside!

Yeah, I like papilio as well. They look so different. I find them hard to find. so I don't have that one yet. I just drool over internet images for now.

Many Amaryllis sold at big box store in US are mislabelbed. I tried a few online vendors and found one good source.
I usually get mine from a local farmer's market though. There is this cut flower guy who brings wonderful lilies, tulips, hyacinths all year around, and in the late fall or late winter (depending on the weather), he will bring potted&named Amaryllis.
His bulbs are the best quality and lots of different varieties to choose from. They are already potted, in bud, and cheaper than online, so I buy from him a lot.

I love these plants so I buy lots. and although they are all super healthy, I just discard them as they take up so much space with large leaves all over the place.
I am going to keep these guys though. so I will now have 6!
I dumped one cattleya today (persistent scale issue), so one more Amaryllis to fit in. Yay!!!

Your supposedly papilio turned out white is a real bummer! it's a world of difference!

Hi, Ryan~

I think I read some of your post on garden forum about amaryllis. When I saw Ryan in Colorado, I thought of you. Is that you??
The posts are old though.

I love these plants too! I just wish I had a large space to grow more. There are so many I want to have!
but for now, I just buy, enjoy blooms and toss.

Sometimes they can bloom spring and again in the fall.

I personally love double white. Alfresco is my favorite. They always make three stalks and each stalk will have 4-6 flowers.
Similar ones are Ice Queen, Snow (or white) Nymph, White Peacock (scented). There are others but those are the ones I had before and love them all! wish I had kept them all. oh, well...

Super!

Certain hybrids, usually the ones made for cut flower trade, make lots of stalks. Of course the bulb should be grown as big as possible to do that.
