It's been about 3 years - I may have unintentionally set it back the first year - after the caterpillars ate every last leaf on it the first fall, I cut off a lot of the vines since they were leafless. The caterpillars did again eat every last leaf on it last fall, but I didn't cut anything off til just some clearly dead vines about a month ago. Don't know if cutting or not cutting made any difference or not.
Thanks - I think it's beautiful too!

I have one too and have decided to grow it for the butterflies and caterpillars. They strip it every year but it comes back better the next time.
My sister-in-law grows hers potted and it does well also.
A really cool plant

nice pretty flower they dont have to be all orchids to be nice to grow..I would like to just have the room for one of these..They do have a hybrid made just for container gardeners now I see after further review.
Nice growing from a seed

Thanks Yes, I enjoy other flowers as well.
I don't know what type/variety/species/hybrid this one may be, as I just was given a few loose seeds. I doubt it was designed for container growing, but seems to do ok in a container anyway - tho would probably be more robust in the ground or maybe even a larger pot ...

These grow great in pots! My older one gets thirty feet or more (I cut it way back to get it in or out of the house). It is in a twelve or fourteen inch pot and super-rootbound, has been for the past seven years. They will winter over against a north window (but not grow much) but prefer, very much, a south window. I think the tropical ones only are said to live seven years(?--mine has lived nine) and some have complicated pollination requirements. I have been looking for cultivar 'Black Knight' as that has fragrant flowers and is self pollinating. Someday....

Very cool! Fortunately I can grow mine outdoors year-round, I just don't have a spot in ground to put it. I'm leaving pollination to the bees and butterflies - will have to see how that goes. Well, dang, just the name 'Black Knight' makes me want it lol - Hope you can find one!

First fruit developing already!
Woot!
I'm surprised at how fast this developed - seems to have appeared overnight

I have to agree with leafmite - these produce more flowers and more fruit when very root bound. Small pots are great for them.
If you get some nice fruit off of the vine, try adding the juice and seeds to butter-cream icing and putting it on a plain sponge cake - it gives is extra oomph.
