Default La Cucarachasaurus??

Found this dead giant roach on the sidewalk. This is definitely the biggest roach I'v seen outside of the hissing ones they sometimes sell at pet stores. It's about 3 inches long. Any ID ideas?

Not a roach. It's actually a giant water bug, largest beetle-type insect in North America, more closely related to cicadas. Predatory insects that sometimes "play dead" when threatened, but they can have a very nasty painful bite if you mess with them. They're considered a delicacy in some Asian countries. Yum!

WOW! Thanks for the thorough explanation. I didn't touch it for obvious reasons, and because I didn't want to wake Frankenstein. Nice to know they can bite too... it looks like a roach, it's bigger than a roach, it plays dead, and then it BITES you! Perfect.

OMG, thats jiust too big and roachy looking.
I once had an epic battle with one of those waterbugs in my apartment. They tend to get in during the hot summer months.
From the highest reaches of my ceilings, to the lowest crevices under my sofas, I fought with it, spraying it with roach spray (weapon of my choice). It would counter and fly at me attempting to hit me with it enourmous body. This went on for 20 minutes until at last I slew my enemy upon the window side. There I trapped its broken body under a glass jar to leave it as proof to my wife the next mornig. In the morning, the glass jar had been tipped over and my enemy was gone. Daa.da.daaaaaa!!!

LOL!!! A similar scenario went through my head when I saw the thing, hence me not touching it...
