Will the world really end in 2012? According to the Mayan calendar? Do you believe this?

About as much as believing the world will end on a certain date because Google Calendar doesn't go on forever either.

Well...if it does end this year I will have died a happy woman surrounded by the beauty of my Orchid Collection I believe that I will get to enjoy them much later that Dec 31st!

The Mayan calendar ends on the 21 December 2012 but the puppies and kittens calendar I bought from my newsagent says the world will end on the 31st December 2012. Which should I believe? I know the Mayan calendar is based on complex astronomical cycles but puppies are so cute so I'm thinking the 31st might be more accurate.

The Mayan calendar ends but the world does not. The Mayans measured time in epochs (I don't remember how long they were). The last epoch ends at the end of 2012 but that does not mean the world does.
When the calendar for 2011 you had ended, what did you do with it? You replaced it with one for 2012 and the world continued on.
For those of a more spiritual bent, open your Bible to Psalm 37 and read verses 11, 29 & 34.

Absolutely not!

The Myan Calender has reset More than once. This is not the first time it has turned over, it will not be the last.

These Doomsday Prophecies do more harm then good in my humble opinion. Take for example the Woman who killed her children and herself because she believed the world would end.
It didn't. But then her children will never know that!

I don't believe it at all. I saw a cartoon recently depicting the Myan who carved it. The text was something like (not sure the exact words)...

"I only had space to go up to 2012, it's going to freak somebody out in the future!"

When my great-grandparents were young their religious group were convinced the world was going to end and so there was no point either having children, or if you did in teaching the children anything. My great-grandparents were some of the few amongst their peers who went against that thinking.

I remember back when there was a whole fuss about 2000 being the end of the world... looked what happened to that!

I agree with Triffid, such predications are not only wrong, but dangerous. I don't think we are meant to know the time.

the earth goes thru cycles. Who knows what is in store for use. With little equipment back in the day, and not really knowing how, but people like Nostradamus,Galileo and others figured out the plants and solar system pretty accurately. Having said that No I don't think the world will end on that certain day but I do think we are headed into a violent cycle here on earth. How violent? Who knows. The why is being debated daily, It takes quite a long time for it to happen.
