trip to New York
So we are contemplating a trip out to New York. It'll be our first time. The farthest we've gone over the border (driving) was to the Prime outlets. (are they still called that?)
Seeing as we have many American orchids growers, what do you suggest we do/see in the big apple?
I have 2 daughters as well (5,9)

NYC is really something when seen from the water. You may want to consider one of these types of sightseeing trips.
New York Circle Line Cruise - Full Island Sightseeing Tours in New York City
It's funny but one thing most of us that live near the city don't do is visit the sights. I've lived near the city for almost 60 years and just went up to the top of the Empire State Building for the first time a year or so ago. That was nice!

trip to New York
Pity the statue of Liberty is closed for remodeling/repairs. From what I understand, you can still go to the island, just not into the statue.
Does the Staten Island Ferry still just cost 5 or 10 cents? That is a cheap outing there and back.
If anyone likes to sew, go to the garment district for fabrics.
Just a couple of days in NYC gets no more than a tantalizing taste of the possibilities.
Try the Bronx Zoo too.

go to the south ferry and ride the staten island ferry for free and back to manhattan(it takes an hour to and from)...you will see the statue of liberty up close and also experience a boat ride like the natives going to work and going home

Yeah Staten Island ferry is free and worthwhile. Garment district somehow is one of the ugliest neighborhoods, with no good food, mostly chains. chaotic and uninviting. I would go there only if looking for something. It depends on the interests. For electronics etc I would go to J and R, a lot cheaper than Canada. Probably a copy of Time Out NY could give some good advice.

My favorite thing to visit in new york is high line park. They converted the old elevated rail lines into a park with gardens. The High Line

Bud, the ferry sounds interesting. Kids might like that. As far as shopping, Hmmmm....I'd like to but hubby might not. My girls are into Monster High dolls, so maybe I'll keep an eye out.
Thanks for the ideas.
