Snake in the ..... pot

I knew there was a smallish snake hanging around my plants on the table but had not gotten more than a quick glimpse of it until yesterday. There he was, curled up in the pot of an orchid, quite happy apparently. It was a small (young) snake but I could not come up with which one. Just to see what his personality was, I took a large dry oak leaf and waved the stem in front of him, no reaction. Then I stroked his head with the stem. Looked like he liked it because he lowered his head to make it easier to reach. He was flicking his tongue but really no other reaction.
So, to Google I go. snakes Texas. The first site just showed non venomous snakes-not mine. The next site showed a larger variety, including venomous ones. YIKES, it is a copper head. They usually are a bit aggressive but this one was quite mellow. I hope I see him again and this time get a picture.
I'm just wondering what he is eating. I hope it is the grasshoppers and snails that are eating my orchid buds.

That is strange that snakes come near your house. You must get a pet dog or cat; snakes will never come near=they can smell each other and avoid each other.
If you have a young snake, chances are they have their brothers and sisters a mile around...and the nest must be in your viscinity ...
but its winter and they are looking for places to hybernate. And then comes spring when they will be hungry and find prey and double their size and length.
The main reason why it is docile: it is cold and it is ready to hybernate and sleep for the winter. This spring better avoid any snake poisonous or not they are out for the kill.

Wow Be careful. No need to get bit. I would find it another home next time I seen him/her. Non venomous snakes are OK with me but the poisonous ones have to go.

Oh, I do have two cats around here. Maybe they have not seen the snake as yet if it stays on the table. I have around 5 acres for any fauna to roam in so if "my" snake has siblings around they have plenty of living space. In years past I have seen adult copper heads around but never had any problems with them. I believe in "live and let live" when it comes to native predators.
I just thought it was interesting to see this snake where I found him. It has not gotten very cold here as yet but we are awaiting a cold front tomorrow and some RAIN, yes, please some rain.

Well...you have a good attitude with poisonous snakes...it eats mice and rats which is even far more gross...cats will have their smell all over your territory so the adult poisonous snakes will avoid their space. The snakes will definitely avoid entering your house even thru its indoor plumbings and seawage holes

flhiker : I just wanted to let you know, all the american studies show that relocating snakes, which have specific hybernating areas, will kill 99,9% of them. It's a problematic my herpetology teacher talked about in class because of a similar case here in Quebec where they want to relocate brown snakes but don't take in account american studies, so were basically going to kill them...

Although I understand it is poisonous and convincing it to live elsewhere than in orchids pots could be a good idea. It could go hibernate with its parents.
