I didn't have time to read all the post, but Dorthy there are a lot of hardy Hibiscus you could grow in N.Y. This is one in my yard in the Chicago area, it's a Hibiscus moscheutos it's a perennial comes back every year. It's about 3ft tall the flowers are 6-8" across.

I have yet to try hardy perennials .. but you are sure making it tempting ..
