HELP! I need help identifying this plant I ust got Female
Question HELP! I need help identifying this plant I ust got

Here is a new plant we got from our neighbor... Noone knows what it is or what it does...

The leaves are growing from a circular stem on top. It is really a neat plant. It was growing in shade if that helps.

Looks like a type of Amorphophallus. I have pictures of one I have in the Social group..http://www.orchidboard.com/community...-pictures.html

If it flowers next year, you will know it. LOL

Thanks guys. A few questions still...

1. Does it flower or anything? If so, what time of year?
2. What are some suggestions in caring for it?
3. Will it spread/multiply?

Thanks everyone!!

1.Yes they need to be so many years old (not sure how many) before they will but when it does you will know it long before you see it...
2. I live in south Florida so I don't do anything. But if you live where it get real cold you may have to dig the bulb up in the winter.

3. Only after it flowers. I was given one and after a few years it flowered. Now that it flowers I have many new bulbs. I recently moved my original bulb and found a couple dozen new bulbs.

My leaf structure is different then yours. More palm frond like.

Hmmmm, I do not recall seeing a bulb. There may have been a small one attached, but when we dug it up it look like just a good root system.. I am very excited to see what this plant does in the coming years.

And yes, if I ever get some bulbs I would love to trade!

How long does the flower last??

If you left soil around the base when you dug it up you may not of noticed the bulb. The flower mine puts out is very ugly and last's about a week before it starts to wilt. The first night is the day you wont forget. They call them the corpse flower and they put out a scent of a dead animal, to attract those green fly's. Luckily mine only last about 4 to 6 hours. I don't know what variety (and there are many) your is, so I don't really know.

Sorry folks, that is not Amorphophallus - it is Sauromatum venosum. Probably hardy for you in Chicago with heavy mulch for the winter. Think of it as somewhere between Amorphophallus and Arisaema (jack-in-the-pulpit). An internet search should turn up plenty of info. BTW, the entire visible plant you see in the picture is all one leaf.
