purchased a typhonium gutaltum and can find no info on this plant. can anyone help? - Orchid Board

Went to Kansas University sale and have a typhonium gutalatum and can find no info on this plant It has a leopard spotted dark green stem. Fast growing many pups.Leaves are a half umbrella TYPE. Any info appreciated. Johnitat

It probably should be Typhonium guttatum = Typhonium (or Sauromatum) venosum. One of my favorite aroids. Your description seems to match and it is probably the most commonly grown plant in the genus. Grows like a weed if it is happy. You should have no problem finding info about it.

Hello, I keep my Typhonium varians in regular potting soil mixed with rocks and a little sand (barely noticable). During its active season I keep the dish under the pot filled with water, sometime around November it decides to go dormant and I keep it at room temp and 0 water until March. I keep it indoors, under 8 t5 lights 6500k. I started with three corms four years ago. Now I have three pots full of corms, and gave away 40 corms this season.

I do not think we have it identified yet. The plant has doubled in size in 4 months and is 4 foot tall. Makes babies or pups all around base of plant. The spots are very light as babies and then get darker and darker until it is very dark green with spots like a leopard or snake. Someone said it was an orchid relative and I did buy it in Winfied Kansas as a bunch of us from Oklahoma drove there for an orchid sale at the college greenhouse.
It is a real eye catcher when people come into my greenhouse. The leaves are 1/2 umbrella type
I have googled and found nothing. I am going to use the saucer with water someone mentioned because when I get home on a hot day it already needs more water. I an going to plant one of the young plants out by the pond tp see what happens. Johnitat

This is not related to orchids, very different families. However both are monocots. This is related to peace lilies, Amorphophallus, skunk cabbage, duck weeds, Anthuriums, Calla lilies, Lords and ladies, Jack in the pulpit etc.....

Google turns up a lot of results for Typhonium venosum, is there particular other info you're looking for?

If you're unsure of the ID on what you've got, posting pictures is the best way for folks here to help out with that. Whatever it is, it sounds like a cool plant.

It is not unusual for the large form of Typhonium venosum to reach 4 feet tall, and everything else you have said about the plant matches that species. It is definitely an aroid, not an orchid. It should be hardy to at least zone 6 so it should be fine to plant outside if you are in Oklahoma, in fact that is probably best. You should be able to do an internet search for pictures of Typhonium venosum (or Typhonium guttatum, Sauromatum venosum or Sauromatum guttatum) if you still doubt the identification. Or just check wikipedia. Information on this species is abundant on the web.

I would be happy to send one if it had any. When I dig down I just find roots. There are many small plants that come up around it. I will watch for corms and if I find any I will email again. I might be able to send a small plant. johnitat
