Default 'New' favorite tool - scythe

I bought this at an antique fair 7 or 8 years ago, and didn't get it out until a few days ago. It is the most awesome tool ever. My 'pasture' (really a swamp) nearly ate my 500lb commercial mower, had to winch it out. This thing is faster and more satisfying. Eats trees up to almost an inch, too.

Cool! I used one of those in my late teans to clear a garden for an old lady in our village. The grass had got so tall the mower just could not cope, the sythe was just brilliant. My Dad was a farmer and had all sorts of old things like this in his workshop. Once sharpened it worked a treat

Cool. I grew up using one regularly. I love 'antiques' that are still as useful now as they were years ago.

There are two styles of scythe. American and Austrian (or european). This one is american style. They are made of different steel, the american style holds an edge much longer (and can be sharpened on a grinding wheel). Austrian style is softer steel, and need to be sharpened by 'peening' (with a hammer) - I'm not up to that. Mine hasn't been used in forever and it still had a wicked sharp edge on it (I'm sure I've dulled it a bit in the last couple days).

American style is more an implement of destruction. There is effort involved. Austrian style is supposedly more like dancing.

May I also add, a White Horse! Preferably Shire, but that's optional.

My husband found a brand new scythe on line. We let our "lawn" grow into a meadow and we (he, actually)plan to use it once a year. He tried it out and it works well.
