Abigail, I'm not seeing the negative here.

I work at home, too. I'm a semi retired artist, so I am lucky enogh to be on Orchid board quite a bit. I'm learning a lot that the books don't tell you!

my first book comes out this fall, and I am just about finished with it.
Nice to see so many work-at-home folks! It gets lonely!

'Mathy' is good! I semi-work at home (split time between teaching/ lecturing and writing my PhD... nearly done ) I tend to come on here when I'm waiting for e-mail replies or when I'm taking a break from writing (or when I get an e-mail from a thread I'm interested in!)
I also agree that my collection has grown more than it would have if I hadn't signed up... and the only thing that hurts is my bank balance!

I admire mathy people -- and people who are left-brained in general! There's a reason I was a literature major in college... totally right-brained.
Also, the very science-oriencted threads make my head swim. The members who can rattle off all kinds of chemistry and biology jargon leave me in awe. Even with a literature degree I need a dictionary to read some of their posts!
Joining this board hasn't depleted my bank account yet... mostly because I'm trading a local grower free work in his greenhouses for orchids!
