Default I'm engaged!

My bf proposed last Saturday at the Marble falls at Sequoia National Park. It was very sweet. I couldn't be happier. We camp at Sequoia a lot and it was a very special place to both of us.

All week I've been reading up on weddings. I'm mortified how expensive weddings are.

Congrats on your engagement! So wonderful!
Well, the wedding will only be as expensive as you want it to be We had a very, very small one, because neither of us wanted to get into debt, and I honestly just didn't want the stress of such a big day. I have to say, I enjoyed every second of it.
Whatever you decide to do, it'll be one of the happiest days of your life!

Thanks Lana.
I am very excited. And yes, I am looking at a small wedding myself. We want to start looking at houses and rather have enough for downpayment than sink money on a big wedding. No definate date yet, but sometime in September sounds good to us.

Congratulations

You don't need to spend lots. We had a very small wedding. Very very small, just 15 people including us (Parents, Grandparents and siblings with their partners).

It was such a wonderful unstressful day where everyone could just be relaxed and enjoy themselves and there were no worries about everything going right because there was so little to it.

We had to pay the registry office, we bought a dress for me (that was one of the most expensive parts), new shoes for my hubby, a button hole flower for my hubby and his brother (best man) and a boquet of flowers for me, and my Dad paid for a restraunt meal for the 15 of us, oh and my in-laws bought some champagne while they were in France and my MIL made a cake, both of which we had at a relaxed get together at our house after the meal.

That was it. We did more preperation for my Sisters wedding when we turned up the night before that and helped with some of the final bits, than we did for ours.

You don't need to be as small as we went (or you could go smaller) but just do what you feel comfortable with and can afford.

Congrats! What a special moment for you!

I concur that it doesn't have to be an expensive wedding. It's a common cultural phenomenon that we all think weddings have to be elaborate and expensive when in truth there are many things that can be done (or not done) to bring that expense down.

Your memory of a "cheaper" wedding will not cheapen the experience! It is your love for one another that truly matters.

BTW, does he know he's also marrying all of your orchids, lol...

We had about 100 guests and only spent around 3000. Paid the most for the meal for everyone. We were supposed to get married outside, but it rained so we were married inside our local cave attraction. I always say what could be more wonderful than getting married IN mother earth.

How about a wedding where you were engaged?

Thanks everyone for such warm wishes!

It is so nice to see that small weddings do happen. I have been pretty discouraged that most places I called so far have a minimum of 50 guests for a reception, and we only want to invite our family and few good friends (about 30 total). I will keep looking.

He is very supportive of my new hobby, but he does roll his eyes when I bring a new orchid home...

Now, that is impressive!

We would love to get married in Sequoia. However, we have few elderly people that might not make the drive there comfortably (its a minimum 3 hour drive there for us). I was thinking of local state or city parks might be nice for a ceremony...
