Ha ha! I have to admit, I thought about that when I saw it growing in a zoo in Norfolk last year and, no offence, you're a lot colder than Norfolk!

..... maybe they're working undercover as rhubarb on an evil plot to take over the land of our fair Island...

Well, Gussie, my gunnera was planted three years ago and has grown almost exponentially ever since. I didn't even cover her to protect her from frosts this year and she's about to romp away again I might get dinner table sized leaves on her this year but I'll post the pics if she does lol.

Ok, I'm going to put it down to the fact that I'm suffering from a horrid cold at the moment because it took a couple of reads before my brain corrected what I first thought was 'dinner plate' and not 'dinner table'. Definately looking forward to pictures now! It's a shame the leaves don't have any use (or do they?), you could make a fortune.... does anything eat them? could sell to the local zoo

LMAO! Last year the leaves were around four feet wide so I'm hoping they'll be at least a foot wider. I'll give her tons of nitrogen and see what comes up and smothers everything lol. Yo could wear a couple for a fancy dress parade lol. I'll have to look at the pics again to see how big they were...

I know! These grow in Heligan Gardens down south I think. Somewhere I have a picture of my hubby being dwarfed by one when we visited down there.

I've always understood these are poisonous, at least to humans

They are but as to how toxic they are I have no idea. Happily, I prefer to look at mine and not eat it hehe
