Default Spider-plant Keiki

My reverse variegated spider plant is having babies. The keikis' leaf span is about 1.5" long so far and they have no roots. How long do I wait till they are ready to be removed? Will they grow roots while attached to it's mother or will I need to grow roots in the water?
Thanks.

Not sure, but I have never heard of a reverse varigated and would love to see a picture. That way I can drool and decide I need one.

I'd let them get bigger before you remove them. The roots on mine never get past the nubbin stage until I cut them and put them in water. I'd like to see a pic of your reverse varigated too.

I used to have another variegated spider plant which was white inside the leaf and green coloring outside but my kitty destroyed it. I got this one from OSH and its label said "reverse variegated." It has green on the inside and white on the outside. I hanged this one up so four legged monsters can't get to it (I hope).

those are generallyfairlyeasy to root - but youcan wait until its got roots topot - or a great option is if you can put it on some dirt prior to cutting and then it will quite happily start putting out roots

as far as i can tell - that is the only way spider plants reproduce....most happy spider plants will generally have extra sproutlets attached

According Wiki pedia:-
"The Spider Plant is very easy to spread. They can be propagated by splitting its main rosette. It is even easier to remove plantlets from the stolons and planting them separately or putting them in a glass of water. They will grow roots readily in water but establish faster in soil while still attached to the parent plant, pinning the plantlet to the soil with a bent paper clip can be helpful. Make sure the soil is damp and well draining. The plantlet can then be removed from the parent plant in 7-10 days."

Spider plants will root very quickly.. last time I repotted 'Keikies' (they were rootless ) into a pot with compost they grew roots very quickly. they love being moist all the time. I once put some in water & same happened they grew roots very quickly!

Plants are so cool! I'm really excited to have spider plantlets. Between the orchids and house plants soon I will have no room in the house.

Thank you all for tons of info. I really like this forum. We have such a helping community at OB.

I used to have the standard varigated sort. We used to pull the keikis off the stems of the mother when they were a reasonable size, but they rarely had roots at that point. We just stuck the base in some potting soil and they soon seemed to root.
