Earthquake in Japan

What a devastating natural disaster. My heart goes out to those who died and those lost their loved ones in this earthquake.

It has been quite the disaster. And thank you for your thoughts.

We were terrified as one of our nephews and his Japanese wife live just north of Tokyo along the seaboard. They were supposed to be in Tokyo getting her papers to come to the United States to live when the earthquake hit.

We could not reach them by phone, nor had they updated any social media to let people know they were alright. They were finally able to conect to Facebook late last night to let us know they were alive. They had made it to Tokyo and were boarding the subway's when it hit.

We do not know about her family though, and I would assume they lived near her family on the northern edge of the seaboard outside of Tokyo.

I will keep them in my thoughts and hope that your daughter-in-law's family is safe.

Very sad situation. I am praying daily that there is as little heartache as possible. Glad to hear you son and daughter in law are alright.

well I think we all know now that recovery from this is just not on japan but on the whole world. Its not just japans problem anymore. Any hope of them recovering gets darker and darker each day. I find tears in my eyes watching the faces of these people who have lost everything and no chance of recovery. I see them holding pictures of loved ones missing. They must soon accept their fate at this point was probably more merciful than those left in the aftermath. 70+ countries have sent or are sending help and aid..Shows that many cultures can put aside their differences for a moment where real human tragedy is involved and do the right things. I cant type anymore my eyes are drowning and my keyboards getting wet..Note that some orchid sellers are offering specials where half of the sales will be donated to the japanese relief effort.

It is very heart breaking. I cannot watch the news without tears. And as if the earthquake followed by tsunami wasn't devastating, the nuclear crisis isn't making recovery any easier. I wonder if we could set up some kind of donation section here on OB as well.

I have many friends at work who have lost friends and family in this (and a few who were linked to the New Zealand quake as well) and it's abousolutely heartbreaking. There have been lots of fundraising on the campus which is going strong (one group of students raised over £500 on the first day). Like RJ says, when real human beings get together, there is always cross-cultural compassion x
