Default Booted Racket-Tail Hummingbird (Ochreatus underwoodii) - Mindo, Ecuador

Sheila and I visited northern Ecuador six years ago with a birding group my parents belonged to. We saw this species a number of times, but I never got a shot that I liked. I thought about it off an on since the last visit. On this trip, I had been in Mindo for less than an hour when I got this shot:

Thanks, Joann! He was very cooperative. Of course, the trick to hummingbirds is to take lots and lots and lots and lots of pictures and then get rid of most of them!

What an awesome pic!! I don't see the slightest amount of blur in the wings, which is pretty amazing considering how fast these birds beat their wings. I can imagine that you needed to take lots of shots to get this amazing photo.

Another great shot. Did you do that with a flash?
I've noticed that using flash to shoot hummers gives the green feathers a yellowish reflection. I think it may be similar optically to "red eye" in photos of people.

I've noticed it as well. I like using a flash for hummers in flight though. The other cool thing with flash is that it sometimes brings up the irridescence of the feathers that can be lost in a shadow.

Wow!!! Way cool. When using flash you can freeze the action. Its totally cool. Are the colours true? Well I guess with iridescence the colours are always true, just depends on the lighting.
