So the phone rings yesterday (Friday PM). It is my bank asking me if I had made two purchases at Target and one for $200+ at Walmart out of state. Well, no. I haven't been out of state for several years. That phone call at least solved the mystery of why, when I went to pay for lunch on Thursday, my card was denied and this just after I had used it an hour previous.
Thanks to the bank for their alertness and a warning to you all; check your statements, the thieves are out there. I really cannot figure out how someone out of state got my card number. I do buy things online but use PayPal.
Now I need to wait until the bank sends me a new card and I did so like the number on the old one.

I'm sorry you had this happen to you!! It just happened to me a week ago as well. Glad your bank caught it so quickly though..

I just got to thinking as to why the bank probably caught it so quickly. I think the thief overdrew my account. If the buy at Walmart was $200+ and the two Target buys were somewhat similar, I did not have that much money in my account.
SS check arrives on Wednesday+ Special sale at local grower's on Friday= I've made my list.

Nice! Mine happened when my check hit the bank so I had a lot in my account.. It all just got put back in so I can do my Christmas shopping now! My thief used a paypal account and also got some stuff from Amazon.com. They must have accidentally sent some of it to my address though, because some books showed up that I did not buy. That is what tipped me off... getting Keith Richard's autobiography in the mail.

Sure does wreck the Christmas spirit.
Our credit card account got hit last spring- somebody in Italy was using it to buy pornography. We had to wait for new cards, and adjust to a new number, but we lost nothing.
Be especially careful with debit cards as they access your checking account directly, and you may not have as much protection as you do with a credit card. I only use the debit card at local stores that I know. And never, ever use your debit card at a gas station or a convenience store.
At least that's the advice from Consumer Reports.
