In need of expert botanist

A few years ago I was given a couple of bulbs and was told what they were but dont remember(first pic) Every year they would come up in the spring and each year they would be bigger. They look the shape of a palm tree. No pic of plant fully growen. Then would die out in the winter.This year one is sprouting as normal but the other one grew something I have never seen before (The second pic) Any Ideas what might be
