Yeauch, they are really ugly to me - like something out of a horror film! I'm going on a fungus Foray at the local park tomorrow, hope we don't find anything so creepy! Although Jew's Ears are pretty weird too. (Yes I wondered about the common name, but I don'e know the Latin.) They grow on the underside of branches and apparently are edible. I'll try and get a photoof some local ones tomorrow.

Great photograph, Ron

A fungus foray - I like that. Wish I could go along.

i want to learn about the local edible species, there are so many fungi about this year, because we have had some wet weather in the summer, and I like free food! We already get blackberries (brambles), cherries, raspberries, elderberries, wild garlic and mulberries, so I want to expand into savoury items. Oh and sloes (small damsons that you put in gin!!!)

Yes, we're into free food, too. The mushrooms we recognize as edible, especially the morels, blackberries, apples, plums, cherries, pears, raspberries - we live in a a kind of paradise here and can usually get as much free fruit as we want - oh, and blueberries, and wild blueberries and huckleberries, and bog cranberries.

North Lincolnshire is very rural, despite being only five miles from a steel town, we are surrounded by rolling countryside, with woodland and water, and every time they list something as getting rarer eg a bird such as the Lapwing, chances are that I've seen one here. We are very fortunate that it isn't considered a particularly desirable part of Britain to live (low employment, relatively bland landscapes) but it has wonderful views and great wildlife. I often see brown hares, despite the gamekeepers best efforts!!
