I have an abundance of nice fawn-colored corduroy that I think would make a beautiful winter skirt.
Anybody have patterns, or ideas? Looking for something more "A" shaped, rather than a straight skirt (blech.)
Simplicity, Butterick, Vogue, McCalls. Any fabric store will stock these four principal pattern books. You can also go to their websites and look at patterns and order from there. The ONE thing with corduroy is that it is a napped fabric. You must cut the pattern pieces going in the same direction. You need to decide beforehand which direction. Drape the piece around your neck with the fabric hanging down on both sides. Look carefully in a mirror under good lighting to see which direction you prefer. There will be at least a slight color and depth difference. Corduroy will creep as you sew it so careful pinning or basting of the seams is necessary before sewing. You must NOT press the fabric on the right side with an iron, you will flatten the nap. Press it over a thick towel on the wrong side but don't get carried away with the pressing. Are you going to wash this skirt or dry-clean it? If you plan on washing it after construction, washing it before construction is absolutely necessary. If it is 100% cotton it will shrink. Tumble dry it until slightly damp and hang it to finish drying. If it is wrinkled after washing, again press carefully over a towel.
If you are a beginning sewist, be sure to use a simple design this time around. Have fun.

Just like to add, (if you have the spare time available):
Check out you local library for Pattern Books, I've seen plenty around. Some books even teach you the basics of making your own patterns and the tricks of the trade, so to speak.
