I had an orb weaver do something like that to me, too. It hid in an orfice in the balcony door railing during the day, and spun a web at night. I opened the door too far one day and squished the poor thing. 
I also keep getting house spiders in my Vandas. They seem to like hiding out between the leaf axils. They creep me out, though - when I water, they run out and dangle from threads.

awww ... well it happens - spiders get squished - even when we don't mean to do it ...
lol - that spiders popping out during watering happens to me too - just remember - you are MUCH bigger than they are lol |

Definitely one of the many species of orb weavers. From you pic, I suspect this one is a male. Hard to be certain, though, without a clearer/sharper pic.

Sorry I didn't post on this thread earlier but, I have agree with Paul it is defenitly an orb weaver and is
most likely to be a male, I think i may have the same type of spider in my yard.

I think both female and male spiders spin webs.
