Default Asiatic Lilies!

I got two four-plant pots at our farmer's market last Sunday. They're so stunning, just fluorescent!

I'm taking pictures later today, and I'm doing research on their culture right now. Since we don't have much bed space, Mom and I haven't decided if we're planting some or keeping them all in pots over the winter.

Who else has them? Let's see some pictures!

asiatic lilies are very easy and dont take much room...just add some bone meal to the hole when you dig the spot and they will be very happy ....panlt a little deeper than they were in teh pot though they grow them shallow in the pots andf they nedd at least a couple inches deeper than that. The top of the actual bulb should be about 6 inches below the top of the soil. They actually make the feeder roots along the stalk that id underground and just a few roots from below the bulb so they realy need that much stalk under the soil when in the ground so they can make these feeder roots along the stem in spring.they also make baby bulbs along the stem too look for them when you unpot might have some bonus babies.

as for a pic hmmm I grow the ornipets instead but let me see how is this planted these this spring forgot the name lol so they are noids byt man they smell good

just keep your kitty away from them - all parts, even the pollen, is toxic to cats

I wish mine had a scent! That's fascinating, with the feeder roots- thanks for the heads up!
I have a friend I can mooch some bone meal from.

What I'm worried about planting is 1. Crowding. How many of these could I plant in roughly a 3' area?
2. My clay soil. I've dug a lot of it out and put in a lot of compost, but 6" down, it can get rather hard. I have a mix that's more sandy that has perlite and compost in it, would that help?

Your ornipets are lovely!

Got it. They'll be sprayed with bitter apple then.

actually quite a few they like company and seem to do much better in clumps I like at least 5 in a spot when planting new and they will fill in fast on their own after that ....any soil makes them happy actualy. But I would amend the soil in the spot I was going to put them with half original from the hole and half what ever I was adding.I dont like to make a huge change from the general area unless Im really making a big bed otherwise it seems to me it changes how fast it drys out compared to the rest and makes for different watering for that spot alone. My tub has 10 in it and it is about 3 foot wide its a huge nursery pot that a tree came in and lol I actually bought three more of the pots later to use for container gardening they are just awesome and portable so LOl they can be moved to show off when in bloom and then out later when they are done for the season.

Thanks John!
So you're talking less than a foot apart?

We have veggies growing in giant tree planters. You're right- very portable!

Oh yes in fact if I was planting them as bulbs instead of potted plants I would put them just a few inches apart ...mine were huge bulbs and lol almost touched each other,The four in the center did in fact then a second ring of them near the outside of the pot filled it up well ....they bloomed good this year but I disbudded them to just 2 buds each for this year so they could realy store up food for a real display next year.
LOL I just could not wait and had to have a few blooms this year to see if they would be what the pkg said they were since I got them at wal mart and they are notorious for showing a picture on the bag that is not what you get ...and they lived up to the reputation this time too they were actually supposed to be more peach colored according to the picture on the package but I can live with it this time ....once bought cannas at wal mart that were supposed to be huge flowered yellow dwarf hybrids and got tiny tiny flowered red ones on 6 foot plants
