Default Echinopsis multiplex

This is a night blooming cactus. It began to open two nights ago, lasted until dusk the next day and was closed never to open again by the morning. I looks very similar to the night blooming "Queen of the Night", Epiphyllum oxypetalum and other night blooming members of the Cereus genus of cacti. It is extremely fragrant with a sweet aroma of nectar and attracts a number of small members of the Hymenoptera Order hopefully for pollination! The thing I don't know and maybe someone here will know is if this species is self-pollinating. They usually have a display of a ring of these trumpet flowers... maybe next time.

Hawkmoths pollinate them. Beautiful bloom. Seems to me a lot of beautiful strange blooms don't last long at all.

I know about the hawkmoths and so this must mean they need to be crossed with another flower and are not selfed.

Beautiful photos! The blooms are stunning, and would be well worth staying up all night just to see them while they last. I checked a reference book for you, this one is allogamous.

Thanks Camille... I had a feeling this was the case since the method of fertilization is the hawkmoth
