Have you recently asked it to eject something? ...Maybe you accidentally removed the drive...just restart the computer, and if this is the case, you should see the drive back on when teh computer fires back up. Good luck!

when you open my computer do you see the cd drive listed ?
If not a restart may help but the next thing to try is to check you cables a loose cable can cause this.Unpug the cable and reattach it ..if this does not help it may be the drive is just shot I cant tell you how many drives I have seen just fail like this.I keep a spare now LOL.

ahh no cables to check the dvd drive is a one piece unit in laptops ...its not that hard to replace though.
you have to take the little door off the bottom and their is one screw that you remove then dvd unit will pull out of side....
I would put a disk in with label in a position I could recall and close it and then open it and see is disk is even spinning...then if it is get a dvd cleaning disk and try cleaning it

I'll suggest here what I have on other PC issues: Windows Housekeeping (or buy a Mac).
Make sure all applications are closed, then click Start, go to Search - all files and folders. In the search, enter "*.tmp, *.spl, ~*.*" and run the search. This finds temp files no longer in use, stalled print files, and any crashed files that may be on the computer (but does not effect applications). Highlight and then delete all files found. Close the Search and empty the Trash folder, then restart the computer. After restart, see if the CD/DVD drive appears again.

Sometimes hardware just fails even fairly new hardware...agreed windows is crappy but shoot some drives wont read all brands of cd and dvd disks right out of the box new ...I have had several that will not read memorex diks but will read everything else and some that wont read a sony disk no matter what. And have had drives fail just poof out of the blue... have you tried several disks? Im sure you have just asking.
I have two dvd drives in my system at the moment and one is a real pita does not like some brands of disk and the other will read anything at all,the other while reading any at all dose not like to record on some brands and tells me there is no disk in the drive or that the dvd is a cd and wont burn it.
I can do a fresh reinstall of windows and this is still the case, so it is not a windows issue in my case.In fact I can do a linux install and have the same issues with these drives.
It really is not that hard to rmove the dvd drive in a laptop ...just looks intimadating the first time.Gole your model for a manual and try pulling the drive and reinstalling it.Much cheaper than a repair shop ...but if your under warranty do what you feel most comfortable with.If your not under warranty still the this is not going to be a issue with voidng it and you can do it yourself and save a lot of money even if you have to by a new drive ....
you can also go to the control panel and open the add new hardware tab and try to reinstall it from there that sometimes works also.

You can try this
Steps for Removing and Replacing the Optical Drive - HP Customer Care (United States - English)
You can remove it and put it back in, see if that get the computer to recognize it. I have to be honest though, it didnt work for me, and the company suggested setting my computer back to factory settings, which I didnt do because I have a lot of programs that I can only get by begging for them from the university I work for. So I just bought an external drive on ebay, and I have dropped it, spilled stuff on it, man handled it, and it still works like a charm.
